Budapest, Hungary’s capital on the Danube River, is a city with history that goes back to Roman times.
Budapest is comprised of two districts. The hilly Buda district is home to Buda’s Old Town and Palace, the 13th-century Matthias Church and Fishermen’s Bastion. The flatter Pest side is connected via the famous 19th Century Chain Bridge and is home to the stunning Hungarian Parliament building and other impressive sights.
The iconic Budapest Castle, home to the Buda Castle Museum and Hungarian National Gallery.
The best way to reach the Budapest Castle is to walk across the famous Chain Bridge.
Then take the Funicular Railway up the hill.
A walk along the Danube Promenade from the Parliament, past the Chain Bridge down to the Elizabeth Bridge is essential.
The stunning Hungarian Parliament is an unmissable sight. The best views are from a river boat in early evening.
The 45-minute guided tours of the Parliament Building are excellent. You get to see the amazing staircase entrance to the building. Tours are available in many different languages. Book in advance as tours are almost always sold out on the day.
Viewing the Upper House (Peers Chamber) is part of the tour.
Parliament is surrounded by gardens and statues, adding the the visually impressive setting.
St Stephens Basilica is huge cupola-topped Roman Catholic church. The weekly organ concerts are excellent. Tickets can usually be bought on the steps of the church.
Budapest Opera House. Short tours with mini concerts are available most days. Book online in advance during peak season.
Slightly further away from the city centre is the Millennium Memorial.
Today, Budapest is a peaceful and beautiful. It’s easy to forget the suffering endured during the second World War and communist regime in the 50’s. The House of Terror Museum offers a glimpse into the past. Arrive early to avoid long queues.
An evening river boat trip on the Danube will reward you with stunning views of the city, castle and famous bridges.
