Founded in Roman times, Valencia&rsquo;s history has been shaped by everything from Medieval times and the Moorish Crusades up to the Spanish Civil War.
Valencia has shaken off its reputation as a port city and is now recognized as an important artistic and cultural hub. It&rsquo;s famous for its impressive architecture, proximity to the sea and being the birthplace of Paella.
<h2>Gay Scene</h2>
Although Valencia has not hit the gay tourism radar as much as say Madrid or Barcelona, the gay scene here is extremely vibrant. There are&nbsp;<a href="https://www.travelgay.com/valencia-gay-bars/">Gay Bars</a>, <a href="https://www.travelgay.com/valencia-gay-dance-clubs/">Gay Dance Clubs</a>, <a href="https://www.travelgay.com/valencia-gay-saunas/">Gay Saunas</a> and <a href="https://www.travelgay.com/valencia-gay-cruise-clubs/">Gay Cruise Clubs</a> scattered throughout the city.
The city is regarded by some as even more liberal than Madrid and Barcelona and was notable for having an elected lesbian mayor from 1991-2015. The city hosts a popular gay Pride parade in June.

<h2>Getting to&nbsp;Valencia</h2>
By plane
Valencia Airport (VLC) also known as Manises Airport is located around 8km from the city centre. It is Spain&rsquo;s tenth largest airport and is well connected to destinations throughout Europe, with a couple of stops in the Middle East and North Africa by flag carriers and budget carriers.
Metro lines 3 and 5 link the airport to the city. Single tickets cost &euro;3.90 and take 25 minutes. Services run from around 5:30 am to half past midnight Monday to Friday with reduced hours at weekends and public holidays.
A cheaper alternative is taking bus line 150 into town for &euro;1.45. The journey takes 45 minutes. It runs Monday to Saturday from 5:30 am to 10pm with reduced service on Saturday. It does not run on Sundays or public holidays.
A taxi rank operates from the airport and journeys into the city centre should cost around the &euro;20 mark. Any journey to and from the airport has an automatic supplement of &euro;5.40.
By ferry
Valencia has scheduled ferry services to and from the Balearic Islands and Algeria. It is also a popular destination for some cruises. Metro lines 4, 5 and 6 provide rail access to the port.
By train
The Estaci&oacute; del Nord offers good connections to destinations in mainland Spain. A high-speed service runs regularly to both Valencia and Madrid. Unlike other European cities, there are no direct international connections.
<h2>Getting around Valencia</h2>
On foot
The best way to take in the sights is by foot. To traverse the city in a straight line shouldn&rsquo;t take more than 45 minutes, varying depending on what pace you're taking. You&rsquo;ll only need to take transport if travelling further afield.
By metro and tram
FGV operates Valencia&rsquo;s modern metros and trams. They run from 5:30 am to 11 pm Monday to Friday and from 6 am to 11:30 pm on weekends. Singles start at &euro;1.50 and ten journey passes at &euro;7.20 depending on zone of travel.
By bus
Buses are a good way of taking in the city. Tickets start at &euro;1.50. Services start at 4 am and end at 10:30 pm Monday to Thursday with a night service lasting until 2am (3:30 am Friday and Saturday). Buses do not run on Sundays.
By taxi
Taxi ranks are commonplace and you can hail a taxi from the side of the road. Official taxicab companies are white with green lights on top. Private taxi firms exist but note that meters start as soon as the driver picks up the call.

<h2>When to Visit</h2>
Valencia has a pleasant Mediterranean coastal climate. April and May are the best time to visit as temperatures are warm and crowds aren&rsquo;t so big. Winters are comfortable and quieter but some attractions have reduced opening hours.
In March the city hosts the Fallas where large papier-m&acirc;ch&eacute; models, usually satirical, are built and displayed in city blocks. Fireworks are almost incessant and a general party vibe prevails. There is also a pride festival in June.
<h2>Money</h2>
Spain is a Euro area country. Cash dispensers are widely available. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted. Hotels, banks and some local businesses also operate foreign exchange desks.

Valencia's Gay Neighbourhoods

Valencia's welcoming, gay-friendly vibe can be seen in everyday life, but especially during the city's many LGBTQ-focused events.
This Spanish city will host the 2026 Gay Games, an inclusive sports and cultural event embracing diversity with participants from across the globe.
Valencia also holds a vibrant annual Pride parade each June, featuring exciting performances by drag queens, DJs, dancers and singers that draw festive crowds. The parade and parties go late into the night, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community with infectious energy and joyful entertainment.

The ability for same-sex couples to legally adopt a child.

Information regarding blood donation by MSM during the Franco dictatorship is unknown, but was probably outlawed along with the practice of homosexuality. No specific legal texts from that historical time period address the issue.

The ability for MSMs (men who have sex with men) to donate blood or tissue for organ transplants. A deferral period refers to a waiting time before a man can donate after having sex.

In Spain, there are no laws restricting to discussion or promotion of LGBTQ+ topics.

Censorship or prohibition of discussing, promoting, or teaching LGBTQ+ topics in media, schools, and in the general public.

On December 22, 2022, the Spanish Congress approves a "Trans Law" 
 
If the law is approved, this point marks that reports or evidence will no longer be needed for a person to make an official registration change of their gender identity. According to the General Directorate of Sexual Diversity and Rights, this can be done "through a system of double appearance, without medical or judicial protection."

Legal recognition of sex reassignment by permitting a change of legal gender on an individual's birth certificate.

Changing your legal gender does not require surgery, however, it does require proof of some form of medical treatment for a period of two years.

Trans law prohibits conversion therapy intended to change sexual orientation, gender identity or expression.

Legal status of conducting sexual orientation changing therapy ("ex-gay" therapy)

Spanish law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, HIV status, and "any other personal or social condition or circumstance.” in employment and provision of goods and services. A comprehensive anti-discrimination bill, called the Zerolo Law, was passed by the Cortes Generales on 30 June 2022.

Prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity in employment, including hiring, promotion, termination, harassment, etc.

In 1979 Adolfo Suárez Government reversed the previous prohibitions on same sex activity. The 1970 Law on Danger and Social Rehabilitation remained active until 1995 but was unenforced after Spain adopted democracy.

Consensual sexual activity between individuals of the same sex.

The Vagrants and Common Delinquents Law (Ley de Vagos y Maleantes) was modified under the regime of Francisco Franco to prohibit homosexual acts, with a penalty of imprisonment. In 1970 the Law on Danger and Social Rehabilitation (Ley Sobre Peligrosidad y Rehabilitación Social) was introduced that further enforced the prohibition and specified a prison term of up to 5 years.

Prohibition of discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity when applying for housing or discrimination by landlords / property owners.

In July of 2005, Spain became the third country in the world to legalize gay marriage, following the Netherlands and Belgium. The law, which was passed by the Spanish parliament and signed into law by Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, also allows same-sex couples to adopt children.

Marriage and marriage recognition between two people of the same biological sex and/or gender identity.

The Ley de Arrendamientos Urbanos (Urban Leasing Law) was passed in 1994, allowing registered cohabitation for same-sex couples which granted some of the rights previously reserved for married couples.

As of 2009, the courts also ruled that transgender individuals are also permitted to serve in the military.

The ability for homosexuals to serve in the military and be open about their sexuality.

Law 4/2023 modifies article 49 of Law 20/2011 of the Civil Registry to provide that, in the event that the birth report 
indicates the intersex condition of the person born, the parents, by common agreement, may request that the mention of sex appear blank for a maximum period of one year. After the maximum period of one year, the mention of the. Sex will be mandatory and registration will have to be requested by the parents. There is no third sex option available in national documents.

Legal recognition of non-binary, genderqueer, or third gender identities.

Spain does not recognise non-binary gender identities. Proposed legislation that would have provided recognition was rejected in 2021.
