After the astounding and moving victory of Kalush Orchestra in 2022, Ukraine should traditionally be hosting this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. However, due to the ongoing Russian invasion, this year’s festivities will be held in the United Kingdom.
Eurovision Song Contest 2023 will be held in the British city of Liverpool, a destination with decades of musical history that has given rise to an array of global superstars including The Beatles. The city has evolved from its industrial past to become one of the country’s most thriving and dynamic cultural hubs. The city’s metropolitan area is the fifth largest in the United Kingdom with a population of 2.2 million.
Whilst many countries will be broadcasting their selection concerts in the run-up to the final, from 9 to 13 May 2023, Liverpool will see the official semi-finals and grand-finals taking place within its historied streets. The event promises to be an all-out celebration of the camp euphoria that has made the contest so popular with the LGBTQ+ community. Many gay bars and clubs will be holding events to coincide with the contest, and hotels are already booking up.
