KyivPride 2025
7 June 2025
Kyiv, Ukraine, Kiev, Ukraine

KyivPride 2025 is set to take place in Kyiv, Ukraine on June 7, 2025, marking a significant moment for LGBTQ+ rights in a country simultaneously fighting for its sovereignty against Russian aggression. As Ukraine's largest and most prominent LGBTQ+ event, KyivPride has evolved from a small gathering into a powerful platform for visibility, advocacy, and solidarity, combining LGBTQ+ rights with the battle for Ukrainian independence.
KyivPride 2025: A Platform for Human Rights
For 2025, KyivPride will return under the slogan "Together for Equality and Victory." The organization's 2025 manifesto emphasizes that "human rights are not something that can be postponed until 'after the victory,'" underscoring the connection between Ukraine's fight against Russian aggression and its commitment to democratic values and equality.
The event will have dual advocacy goals:
- Calling for increased international military support for Ukraine
- Pushing for domestic legislation to protect LGBTQ+ rights, particularly bills providing legal recognition for same-sex relationships
This dual focus reflects the unique context of wartime Pride in Ukraine, where LGBTQ+ rights advocacy takes place alongside the existential battle for national sovereignty. Many LGBTQ+ Ukrainians are serving in the military, with some estimates suggesting between 2-7% of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel are members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The Contrast with Russian-Occupied Territories
The situation for LGBTQ+ Ukrainians in KyivPride stands in stark contrast to those in Russian-occupied territories, where LGBTQ+ individuals face severe persecution under Russian anti-LGBTQ+ laws. Human rights organizations have documented abuses against LGBTQ+ people in occupied areas including public humiliation, torture, extortion, and sexual violence.
For many participants, KyivPride 2025 represents not just a fight for LGBTQ+ rights but also resistance against Russian authoritarianism and its values. As Ukrainians continue to defend their country, KyivPride serves as both a demonstration of democratic principles and a defiant statement that Ukraine's European future includes respect for diversity and human rights.
History and Evolution
KyivPride began in 2012, though the first successful Pride march with significant participation wasn't held until 2016. Since then, it has grown substantially, with the 2021 event (held pre-full-scale invasion) attracting between 5,000-7,000 participants. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, KyivPride was forced to adapt. The 2022 event was held in Warsaw, Poland, joining forces with that city's Equality Parade, as martial law in Ukraine prevented large gatherings.
The 2024 Pride marked a significant milestone as it was the first KyivPride held in Kyiv since the full-scale invasion began. With security as a primary concern, the event was limited to 500 participants and required coordination with military authorities. Several hundred LGBTQ+ activists and allies, including Ukrainian soldiers, marched through central Kyiv on June 16, 2024, demanding legal reforms and demonstrating that the fight for equality continues even during wartime.
