Does Dolly Parton’s estate own Dollywood?

Dolly Parton did not own Dollywood outright. She became a partner in the park with Herschend in 1986, bringing her name, creative influence and deep connection to East Tennessee to what had previously been Silver Dollar City. Dollywood still describes that relationship as a longstanding partnership between Dolly and Herschend.

Following Dolly’s death in August 2026, it is not yet publicly clear exactly how her ownership interest will be held or transferred. That will depend on the legal structure of Dolly Parton Productions, any trusts or estate arrangements, and the terms of the partnership with Herschend. No authoritative public filing has yet confirmed that her estate simply inherits her stake directly.

What is clear is that Dolly’s involvement went far beyond licensing her name. She helped shape the park’s identity around her own story, Appalachian heritage, music and love of the Great Smoky Mountains. Since the partnership began, Dollywood has grown into one of Tennessee’s major attractions and an important employer in the region.

How to get to Dollywood from Knoxville

By Car: The most direct and convenient way is by driving. The distance is about 35-40 miles, and the trip takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. You'll take I-40 East from Knoxville, then exit onto U.S. Highway 441 South toward Sevierville and Pigeon Forge. From there, follow signs to Dollywood.

By Shuttle: If you prefer not to drive, you can check for shuttle services that run between Knoxville and Dollywood, though availability may vary. Local services like Knox Area Transit (KAT) may offer seasonal or special routes.

By Taxi/Rideshare: You can also take a taxi or rideshare service like Uber or Lyft from Knoxville to Dollywood. This is a convenient option if you don't have a car, though it may be more expensive than driving yourself.
