The historic Bairro Alto neighbourhood dates back to the 15th century. The mostly pedestrianized, streets are quiet during the day. But in the evening, restaurants and bars open, giving the area a Bohemian feel. Bairro Alto is also home to Lisbon’s gay bars and clubs.
Neigbouring Chiado is small district between Bairro Alto and Baixa (the city centre) and is full of upmarket shops and boutiques, cafes & theatres.
The 1.6 km treelined Avenida da Liberdade boulevard runs north from the city centre to the Marques de Pombal square. The area has a great choice of hotels, cafés and shops, all with easy reach of the nightlife in Bairro Alto.
