Thrills, food and fun in New Zealand

Looking for a gay adventure or a place to sip cocktails amidst a stunning backdrop? Our editor Kieran Watkins reckons New Zealand is the place for you.

Unspoilt landscapes, picturesque beaches, friendly community spirit; just a couple of things I truly love about New Zealand.

Having recently travelled down under on a much-needed holiday, I was gobsmacked by New Zealand’s unique beauty – and I’m not just talking about the men! It really is a paradise, where nature has been left unspoilt. The forests, the mountains and the sea are all teeming with life and colour.

Although rather small – the population is around 4.5 million – you’ll still find plenty of gay guys here. Although the gay scenes are rather small compared to say cities in Australia, the relaxed, tolerant vibe of many NZ cities makes this a safe, comfortable country to travel to and meet guys.

But which city to travel to? Here’s our guide to NZ’s top city destinations:

For culture buffs

Home to the NZ Parliament and Lord of the Rings, Wellington is a hub for all things quirky and historic. The NZ capital boasts popular tourist attractions including Wellington Cuba StreetTe Papa Tongarewa, the national museum, and the ancient Wellington Cable Car. Popular with students and young, 30-something guys.

Stay: The hi-tech, boutique Ohtel is very impressive, located near the marina. Alternatively, Novotel Wellington is situated right in the heart of Lambton Quay, the main shopping area of the city. Hotel iBis Wellington is another, cheaper alternative for staying centrally.

Drink: Cuba Street is the hipster area that everyone in Wellington is talking about. You’ll find everything here; food, drinks and shops. The focal point of the gay scene, Ivy Bar, is located here. Their cabaret evenings and delicious cocktails are a must. Checkmate Sauna is worth a visit if you want more than a drink.

For thrill-seekers

If you love the outdoors and want to meet muscle men and hot tourists, visit Queenstown, the thrill capital of NZ. Whatever the season there’s plenty to do here, including skiing, kayaking and the legendary bungee-jump.

Drink: Club88 Queenstown, the city’s premier adult entertainment venue. Gay-friendly. Stop off at The Bathhouse for delicious tapas before hitting the club scene.

Stay: The Rees Hotel & Luxury Apartments offers stunning views across Lake Wakatipu, whilst the Scenic Suites Queenstown is conveniently located near the city centre.

For city slickersAuckland

Surrounded by water and an impressive skyline made famous by the iconic Sky Tower, Auckland in the North Island is

NZ’s biggest city, a popular spot for islanders and tourists alike. You’ll find plenty of gay guys here, including businessmen and bears.

Drink at: Twist is a new gay bar complete with go-go dancers and large dancefloor, although the quieter Eagle Bar may be easier to meet people in. NZ’s largest gay sauna, Centurian Sauna, is located in Auckland. Weekly events include Orgy Night and Towels Off – need we say more!

Stay at: The Langham Auckland is only a five-minute walk from the gay area; a luxurious accommodation option to say the least. Other favorites of ours include the Heritage Auckland and Bianco off Queen Apartments.

ChristchurchFor nature lovers

The biggest city in NZ’s South Island, Christchurch is a beautiful city surrounded by nature. From mountain walks to forest trails, check out wildlife, flowers and more. A mixture of older and younger men can be found here.

Drink: The only gay bar in Christchurch is CRUZ, a long-running venue in the city centre. To meet men in a cosier location, visit Menfriends where facilities include a lounge area, play room and bar.

Stay: The George was voted one of NZ’s leading boutique hotels; a favorite luxury option. For those on a budget, the City Centre Motel is a great option
