The 42nd annual Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras in 2021 will be a festival of love, joined by thousands of LGBTQI people and friends from around the world.
This year, the parade and party will take place on 6th March at Sydney Cricket Ground. Rather than the traditional parade through Oxford Street, due to COVID this year’s event will take inspiration from its past and move away from large floats, focusing instead on the outlandish pageantry of vibrant costumes, puppetry and props that made it such a phenomenon in its earliest years.
More details are still waiting to be published on Sydney Mardi Gras’ party plans after the parade, but we expect them to be toned down or cancelled because of the ongoing pandemic.
Fair Day will unfortunately not take place this year and instead will return in 2022. Sydney has also won the bid to host WorldPride in 2023, so the best is yet to come.
“The safety and health of our communities is always our paramount concern. Our challenge is ensuring all our events will be COVID-safe. Using NSW Health guidelines, we’re now working on a number of different scenarios for our largest events.”
