First time in Phangan? Then our essential guide for gay travelers is for you.
Koh Phangan เกาะพะงัน
Koh Phangan is an island located near the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand, just 15 km from the renowned Koh Samui. Phangan is famous for its monthly Full Moon Party which takes place on Haad Rin Beach and attracts huge diverse crowds from around the world.
From its humble fishing village beginnings to becoming infamously known for the parties, Koh Phangan offers the perfect destination for any visitor. The island has picturesque beaches, jungle forests, beautiful fauna - all within a stone’s throw from the lively community.
Gay Scene
The gay scene on Phangan is fast-growing, albeit from a very small scale. There's a small gay beach and a healthy mix of gay-owned & gay-friendly bars, resorts and bungalows. The laid-back vibes and friendliness of the locals & expats make it a popular destination with gay travelers.
Getting to Koh Phangan
Fly from Bangkok to Koh Samui and take a taxi to the nearby Koh Samui pier. There are regular speedboat and public ferry services from the pier to Koh Phangan.
Where to Stay
Party goers tend to stay near Haad Rin where all the parties take place. Thong Nai Pan is the most upmarket area that offers some of Koh Phangan’s most luxurious resorts.
Haad Salad and Haad Yao on the other side of the island have some affordable, basic bungalows that are popular with long-stay backpackers. For our list of recommended hotels, click here to view the Koh Phangan Hotels page.
