Bairro Alto / Chiado

The historic Bairro Alto neighbourhood dates back to the 15th century. The mostly pedestrianized, streets are quiet during the day. But in the evening, restaurants and bars open, giving the area a Bohemian feel. Bairro Alto is also home to Lisbon’s gay bars and clubs.

Neigbouring Chiado is small district between Bairro Alto and Baixa (the city centre) and is full of upmarket shops and boutiques, cafes & theatres.

Why this hotel?: Very central. Beautiful décor. Great value.

Occupying an 18th century building in the historic Baixa district, My Story Hotel Ouro offers a great base to explore Lisbon.

Next to the Marquês de Pombal metro station, there are 3 excellent hotels from the HF group: the HF Lisboa, HF Garden and HF Music.

Our favourite is the HF Music which has a totally cool music-inspired styling. Each soundproof, air-conditioned room has a Bluetooth sound system, mood lighting, electric blinds, flat screen cable TV, free WiFi, desk and safe.

The hotel features a nice restaurant & bar, and a rooftop pool with city views. The breakfast buffet here is very good. Some of Lisbon’s best restaurants, shops and boutiques are within easy walk away.

One of the larger hotels in this area, close to the famous Marques de Pombal Square. The SANA Lisboa has an impressive range of facilities including a gym with a sauna and jacuzzi.

Guest rooms are modern and very comfortable, each featuring free WiFi, TV and air conditioning. Many rooms offer excellent city views.

SANA is well-located for the gay scene. TRUMPS , Bar 106 and all the action in Principe Real are about 15 minutes away. SaunApolo 56 and DRAKO gay cruise club are even closer.

SECRET gay barConstruction club, TRUMPS and the Principe Real gay scene can be reached in 15 minutes. The relatively new gay cruise bar DRAKO Club is even closer.

Gay-owned & -managed apartments in a restored 1920’s building in a quiet residential area, a 2-minute walk from the Saldanha subway station, served by both Yellow and Red Lines, 2 stops to Rato (Príncipe Real) or 4 stops to Baixa-Chiado.

The property was completely renovated in 2017. Each of the 4 guest rooms features a flat screen TV, free WiFi, blackout curtains, alarm clock, hairdryer and electronic safe. Breakfast is served until 1pm, so you won’t have to worry about missing out after a late night out.

The owners have recently introduced a shared dormitory, directed to younger travellers, with 3 bunk beds. In addition, they are now operating a pickup service at the airport, and guided tours. Please see the website for further information.
