A popular gay nightclub in Greenwich Village, just across the road from The Stonewall Inn – ideal for bar-hopping.

Old-fashioned, but the drinks are reasonably priced – at least by New York standards. In the evening, a pianist plays show tunes, inspiring enthusiastic sing-alongs. Later in the night, the basement opens. You can pop downstairs and have a boogie with a mixed crowd, go-go dancers and lip-syncing drag queens including the legendary drag DJ Lady Bunny.

Head there on Saturday for the popular Manster all-night dance party.

Coronavirus Update: Sadly, this iconic gay club will not reopen after the lockdown.

One of the most legendary gay clubs in New York, The Pyramid Club helped to define the local drag scene in the 80s. It’s where Rupaul (ooh, guurl) played his first gig and it was the natural habitat of many drag luminaries, such as Lady Bunny and Lypsinka. Madonna and Debbie Harry also performed here. “Legendary” barely even covers it.

Today it pays homage to its 80s roots. Pyramid hosts 80s themed nights, some honouring the dark side of the 80s (Siouxsie, etc) and others hosting the disco side of the 80s (Madge, Prince, etc).
